As a talk therapist, my theoretical orientation is primarily
cognitive-behavioral. I also like many of the ideas found in solution-focused
brief therapy. And having been trained as a social worker, my focus is always
on the interaction between biological, psychological, and environmental factors
in a person’s life.
Some of the other therapeutic tools I enjoy using are listed
below. Please don’t hesitate to ask for more information about any of them!
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a form of psychological acupressure, based on
the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and
emotional ailments for over five thousand years, but without the invasiveness
of needles. Instead, you simply tap your fingertips onto specific meridians on
the head and chest while thinking about your specific problem - whether it is a
traumatic event, an addiction, pain, etc. -- and voicing positive affirmations.
EFT is very easy to learn and can be done in minutes; its benefits include
reducing or eliminating pain, removing negative emotions, reducing food
cravings, implementing positive goals, and more.
Hypnosis is a
focused state of concentration. I use it as a therapeutic technique in order to
help you gain more control over your behavior, emotions or physical well-being. Have you ever been totally absorbed while reading a book,
cooking or watching a movie? Did you zone out to the point where you didn't
notice what else was going on around you? If so, you've experienced a type of
trance-like state or focused attention that's similar to what happens to you
during hypnosis.
During hypnosis your attention is
focused, and you are more responsive to suggestions. These suggestions, which
we develop together, help you make positive changes within yourself. In a
hypnotherapy session you are always in control and you are not made to do
anything; I merely help facilitate your experience, in which you enter an
enhanced state of awareness, while concentrating on my voice. In this
state, which is typically very relaxing, the conscious mind is suppressed and
the subconscious mind is engaged in the process of change.
Tarot Cards are a
powerful (and fun) tool for accessing your inner-wisdom and gaining
self-empowerment. Each of the 78 cards is filled with deeply symbolic images.
But rather than use them for foretelling the future, instead we work with the
cards to help you visualize goals, explore options, and get in touch with what
really fulfills you. The archetypal images on the cards are perfect for
brainstorming, and lead to creative ways to problem solving and
decision-making. Working with the cards allows us to ask better questions, and
see more options. They are a wonderful tool for creating inspiration, action
and direction.
Vibrational Therapy is
a non-invasive, gentle modality that uses sound and vibration to help restore
your physical, emotional, and spiritual balance. I use instruments such as
singing bowls and tuning forks to help you reduce stress and relax. I have
found that this type of “sonic massage” can strengthen the immune system,
diminish pain, release energetic blockages, allow access to the body’s inner
wisdom, stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself, and create a deeply
meditative state.
Sessions last one hour and take place fully clothed
on a mat on the floor. Singing bowls are placed all around your body, and, if
desired, on your body as well. I also use tuning forks on various acupressure
points. It is my belief that working with vibrations, both on and off the body,
is a powerful way to promote health and wholeness.
